National Sorry Day Ceremony 2022

26/05/2022 at 10:00 am

National Sorry Day is of particular significance to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities not only for Ballarat but for the nation.
The day is an opportunity for all Australians to remember past mistakes and for us to continue to build and strengthen a stronger, meaningful, and respectful relationship together.

We acknowledge the ‘Bringing them Home Report’ that was tabled in Parliament on 26 May 1997. This report details the immense hardship and treatment endured by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. Forceful removal from their families, as part of the official government policy during invasion and colonisation, still impact our communities today, these children are now referred to as the ‘Stolen Generations’.

A short commemorative service will be held at Queen Victoria Square on Thursday 26 May, starting at 10 am, followed by speeches and a video presentation in the Trench Room at the Ballarat Town Hall.
