In 1492 a decree was made by the Spanish King Ferdinand & Isabella that all Jewish people must convert to Catholicism, leave the country or die!
Ballarat Speakers Club member, Jack Aghion, is a descendant of a Jewish family who lived in the Northern Spanish town of Ayllón. Jack has done a great deal of research into the history of his family from that time up to today. He has uncovered for instance that his family decided to convert to Catholicism but they were subsequently discovered during the Inquisition in 1560 to be still practicing their original faith in secret. Most escaped and have since spread across the world.
Jack will reveal this fascinating story of survival and successes as the family members spread around the world and more recently being welcomed back to Ayllón.
